Corrosion performance of aluminium alloys in chloride medium

Résumé : 

The goal of this study is to investigate theelectrochemical behavior of different aluminium alloys in chloride medium, namely aluminium alloys of the series 2000, 6000 and pure aluminium. This study was oriented toward an interesting thematic, firstly microstructural characterization, in order to elucidate the matrix phases composition, then examine the electrochemical behavior against the aggressive environment such as 3% NaClmedium, notoriously known as a provocative aggressive environment of pitting corrosion, as well as demonstrate the correlation between the electrochemical behavior and the microstructure of the samples after corrosion testing. The corrosion behavior of aluminium alloys in 3% NaCl solution were studied by using various techniques, such as, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and optical microscopy. Results show that the two kinds of alloys (Al 2017 and Al 6082), both suffer from pitting corrosion and the corrosion of Al 2017 is much more serious than that of Al 6082 alloy, indicating that the main phase constituting the alloy (Al2Cu-Al2CuMg) is more susceptible to pitting corrosion, ultimately the pure aluminum is the most corrosion resistant because the oxide film Al2O3 is uniformly distributed,consequence of the absence of impurities in the alloy.
